It’s summer in Australia and the end of the school year. To pass the time, my friend Jennifer and I have decided to do some baking together. We hope to able to get together at least once a week. This week we made gingerbread men to get into the festive spirit. We used a recipe from an old recipe book that I had for years. The cover is gone and some of the pages are battered. I considered throwing it away a few years back but luckily I didn’t do that. I haven’t included the recipe in this post because you can find gingerbread recipes anywhere on the internet and this post is about me reflecting on a happy memory rather than a food tutorial.I had never made biscuits before so I hoped that the gingerbread men would turn out alright. We each bought the ingredients before we met for the day as it was the fairest thing to do. While we cooked, we talked about everything under the sun. I love how cooking is an opportunity to get to know another person. We also washed up as we went along because we didn’t want to wash a huge pile of dishes at the end of the day.
We cut the cookies into gingerbread men using a cookie cutter and just made some regular circle cookies. When the biscuits were cooked, we iced them blue, green, yellow and red. Jennifer said the circle biscuits looked like Christmas baubles. We both weren’t that great with the icing so they didn’t look professional but they looked cute enough.
At the end of the day, we divided the biscuits between ourselves. We got eighteen each. It was a fun and relaxing day. Sometimes you don’t need to spend a lot of money or go out to have a good time. The next thing we’ll be making is Oreo Cheesecake.
